How Noticeable Are Adult Braces?

You have the power to straighten your teeth and get the confidence you’ve always wanted at any age.

When most people think of braces, they think of teenagers. In fact, so many teenagers get braces that many people see them as a rite of passage.

Despite the perception, there are countless adults who aren’t happy with the alignment of their teeth. In fact, 25% of people with braces are adults.

You have the power to straighten your teeth and get the confidence you’ve always wanted at any age. Do you have to go through the stress of prominent adult braces to get it, though?

The fact is that there are many types of braces for adults, and some are more discreet than others.

Types of Adult Braces

One reason some adults hold back from straightening their teeth is that they don’t want the temporary look of noticeable braces. Your braces may not be as noticeable as you expect, however, depending on the type of braces you choose.

Metal Braces

Metal braces are the traditional braces we all think of. Metal brackets attach to your teeth and we use metal wires between the brackets.

As you might expect, these are the most noticeable type of braces because the color tends to stand out. They do have their advantages, though.

Metal braces have the power to correct very severe misalignments. They’re also the most budget-friendly option.

Ceramic Braces

If you want adult braces that are less noticeable, the next step up from metal braces is ceramic braces.

While they aren’t well-known, ceramic braces are great options for people who don’t like the look of metal braces. Ceramic braces function the same way metal braces do but the brackets on your teeth are made of tooth-colored ceramic.

While they cost more than metal braces, ceramic braces aren’t as expensive as clear braces. They take some special care as well because if you don’t keep them clean, the ceramic can stain.

If your top priority for your adult braces is for them to be as subtle as possible, Invisalign is your top choice.

Invisalign uses clear plastic liners to reposition your teeth. They fit so well that they’re hard to spot unless you already know they’re there.

The downside is that with Invisalign braces, we can’t adjust them in the orthodontic office. Each “adjustment” requires a new plastic liner. As a result, Invisalign is more expensive than metal and ceramic braces.

Choosing Your Adult Braces

Too many people live their lives feeling self-conscious and holding back their smile because they don’t want to have noticeable adult braces. The fact is that those braces may not affect your look as much as you expect.

The first step is to find out what your options are. While the types of braces above have cosmetic differences, they also have other limitations.

For instance, Invisalign isn’t able to correct severe misalignments. Our orthodontists will be able to review your case and explain all your options as well as the price differences between them.
