Stay Stain-Free During and After Teeth Alignment!

Stains on our teeth is seems to be a fact of modern-day life. From the food we eat to what we drink, we impact our tooth enamel. The fact that only 64% of adults see a dentist each year doesn’t help!

Fortunately, there are steps you can take to keep your teeth stain-free during and after teeth alignment. The type of braces you choose, how you care for your teeth during straightening, and then how you treat your teeth afterward are big factors.

Take a look at some of our top tips for preventing stains!

Consider Your Choice of Braces

Traditionally, braces have consisted of brackets that are mounted on the front of teeth, and then wires connect them to pull teeth into the right position.

That type of correction needs the most care to prevent stains. Fortunately, many of the problems people have with teeth alignment can be solved in other ways.

Invisalign removable aligners are once choice, and having your braces on the back of your teeth, instead of the front, is another.

Talk to your orthodontic team to determine what choice is the best for you. Then move forward with confidence!

Brush and Floss After Every Meal

If you do have front-mounted braces, make sure to brush and floss after every meal. Cleaning the braces and brackets will help you avoid having plaque buildup that can discolor your teeth.

You will also find that keeping your teeth cleaner prevents painful and expensive tooth decay. Consider getting an electric toothbrush to make it easier to get a deeper clean.

You can finish by using mouthwash to rinse away any particles that were left behind. By making this simple process a habit, you’ll have cleaner, less-stained teeth for life!

Don’t Use a Whitening Toothpaste

If you have front-mounted brackets during your teeth straightening, be sure not to use whitening toothpaste during that time. It can cause areas around the brackets to become whiter, but unfortunately when the braces come off the other areas will be darker.

This causes a stark contrast that can be embarrassing, so stick to regular toothpaste during your treatment.

Avoid Staining Foods and Drinks

If you choose a removable aligner or have had your braces removed because teeth straightening is finished, you want to avoid specific foods and drinks that stain your teeth.

Coffee, tea, and citrus are the biggest offender. If you can’t give up these drinks, use a to-go lid to drink through. This limits the buildup in the mouth and helps prevent staining.

Berries and other dark fruits can also stain teeth. Think of it this way – if it stains your clothes, it will stain your teeth as well!

You should also be sure to brush and floss regularly to remove those staining foods and residue from your mouth. Focus on eating high-fiber foods, which helps keep teeth clean as well. And of course, drink plenty of water!
