What to Expect at Your First Orthodontic Appointment
Many people have a lot of anxiety when it comes to getting work on their teeth. Whether the new patient is a child, a teen, or an adult, going to an orthodontist can feel intimidating.
Fortunately, there’s nothing to worry about. At Hodge Orthodontics, we prioritize providing excellent care in a comfortable, friendly environment.
Here’s what you can expect at your first orthodontic appointment!
Photos and X-Rays of Your Teeth
At your first orthodontic appointment, we need to start by understanding how your teeth are currently aligned and why. This means we need pictures!
By taking x-rays, we are able to see your current teeth and how they connect to the jaw. We can also see if any teeth are not yet showing, are unable to erupt, or if there is space for teeth to come in normally.
In addition, the doctor will be able to see if there are any injuries to your teeth or mouth that will impact your treatment.
Once we have the pictures, the orthodontist comes in for a full oral exam. We want to know what the starting point is regarding the health of your gums, teeth, jaw, and more. Your bite will be examined to see if you have an overbite or underbite.
From there, the orthodontist will review your medical and dental history. We want to make sure that your dental health is in great shape so that we can move forward with braces.
Your dental health impacts how successful braces will be, so the orthodontic exam is vital to ensure that your teeth, gums, and jaw are ready to go!
Treatment Plan Recommendation
After the x-rays and exam, the orthodontist will sit down with you and give a recommendation for treatment. You’ll find out whether metal braces, Invisalign, or other correction devices are best for your situation.
We’ll also talk to you about the cost and financing options. We don’t want cost to ever be a barrier to you getting the treatment you need. We accept multiple insurance plans and offer flexible financing so that you can get the confidence and good health you deserve.
If you knew people who had braces years ago, you may have heard horror stories about getting dental impressions. We used to have to use goopy material and have you bite into it in order to get the model for braces.
Fortunately, technology has changed a lot, and today we don’t have to use that. Instead, we’re able to use an intra-oral scanner to get a digital image of your mouth and teeth. This allows us to get an extremely accurate image and fit you with exactly what you need.
