You might wonder why chewing gum is a big no-no while you have braces. While you think you might get away with other chewy treats like taffy, caramel, or Starbursts, we suggest you resist those temptations. Sugary foods can be lodged in hard to clean areas of your mouth, promoting the chances of cavities. When you chew gum, you also have the chance of bending the wire. The wire is specifically placed so the teeth move in a certain direction. If the the wire is bent, your teeth will move in the wrong direction which could lengthen the time of treatment!
We don’t have to tell you that your teeth get sore after each visit. The slightest movement can send your mouth throbbing! Because of this, you will want to avoid foods that require a lot of force to bite through, especially with your front teeth. Also, stay away from anything that makes a crunch noise like chips or chewing ice. You don’t want to bend the wires or pop off a bracket! So unfortunately you might have to skip out on those crunchy tacos on Taco Tuesdays for a bit.
Corn on the cob? More like corn on the bad list.
Like we said before, you want to avoid foods that use primarily your front teeth. And we know Thanksgiving is coming up, but you’re just going to have to wait until next year for that corn on the cob! If you really can’t fight off the temptation, cutting the corn off the cob can be perfectly acceptable, but we’re going to guess there’s pretty good chance one of those bad boys is going to get stuck in your braces. Just make sure to floss and brush your teeth after you’re done!
So what can you eat with braces on?
Soft foods are your best friend now! Scrambled eggs are easy to make, and noodles like spaghetti or ramen are perfect for quick snacks. Steaming vegetables so that they’re soft is also an option. Mashed potatoes, soups, macaroni and cheese are some of the easiest, go-to foods to eat with braces. And don’t forget your liquids like smoothies and protein shakes! These are quick and easy to make, and can give you energy throughout the day. If you just cannot resist the the cravings for foods that might be a little harder to chew, cutting them into smaller pieces can help you. Don’t forget to reward yourself with some of your favorite ice cream! But you might want to leave out the nuts in this case.
