Caring For Your Smile After Braces

Hooray! You made it through your entire treatment and your braces have been removed.

Congratulations!

If you want to keep that beautiful smile looking its best, however, there are some important things you should know about caring for your teeth after orthodontic treatment.

Here are some tips to keep that confident smile glowing!

Wear Your Retainer

One of the biggest disappointments after putting all that time and money into braces is that your teeth can start to shift back to where they were before. Fortunately, there is something you can do about that.

Your orthodontist will probably fit you for a retainer that will help your teeth keep in their proper location. You may not need to wear it all day every day, but you do need to wear it according to the doctor’s instructions.

If you don’t unfortunately many of your misalignment problems can return and you won’t get the benefit you were looking for.

Keep Your Teeth Clean and Healthy

Now that your braces are off, you have access to your teeth just like you used to before. This means no excuses for shoddy brushing or failing to floss!

Instead, take advantage of being free to reach all those difficult places. Brush for the full two minutes, and consider getting an electric toothbrush. You can get inexpensive models and they’ll help you get that much cleaner!

Also, be sure to floss each day. You want to keep your gums healthy and prevent any kind of gum disease. Unfortunately, if you aren’t taking care of your teeth correctly you can have cavities, root problems, and maybe even tooth loss.

Your smile deserves care and cleaning!

Eat Good Food to Stay Healthy

We know you’re excited to dive in to all the food you couldn’t eat with braces. But before you buy six bags of caramels, think about what you really should eat to keep your teeth and body going strong.

Acidic foods can erode your enamel, and too much coffee and tea can stain your teeth. Of course, sugars aren’t good for your body or your teeth.

As you care for yourself in your post-orthodontic life, don’t go crazy with the forbidden foods!

Get Your Dental Checkups Regularly After Braces

No orthodontist would blame you if you didn’t want to rush back to a dental doctor. But at the same time, you need to keep all that hard work in check.

You’ve already gone through the expense and discomfort of teeth alignment. Keep your beautiful smile going strong with regular dental appointments.

You should visit the dentist at least once a year, but twice a year is often recommended. It’s not uncommon to go three or four times a year if your teeth tend to build plaque quickly or you have a lot of cavities.

The important thing to keep in mind is that regular dental visits save you pain, they don’t cause pain. These regular cleanings help you avoid cavities and other serious problems.
